Wayne Newton

November 11, 1939 — June 29, 2013

Wayne Leonard Newton, age 73, of St. Cloud, MN, and formerly of Crookston, MN, died unexpectedly of natural causes early Saturday evening in Crookston. He had been in town for a few days visiting longtime friends. Wayne was born at White Earth, MN on November 11, 1939, the son of Leonard and Cleone (Weum) Newton. He was a member of the Ojibwe Tribe of the White Earth Nation. Wayne grew up in Moorhead, MN and after the age of twelve was raised by his grandmother, Irene Weum, who he loved dearly. She was very pivotal in his life. After graduation from Moorhead High School in 1957 Wayne went on to attend Moorhead State College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Education, while majoring in History. In 1962 he was united in marriage to Dawn Jeneen Hargarve at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Moorhead. The couple made their home in Moorhead where their first daughter, Rochelle, was born. In 1967 Wayne earned a Masters Degree in Counseling from North Dakota State University and he began working as a career counselor for Employment Services of North Dakota in Fargo. The Newton family came to Crookston in 1968 and Wayne was employed at the Division of Vocation Rehabilitation. In 1970 he began a three year stint with the Regional Inter-District Council for Special Education. During this time the couple's second daughter, Sarah, was born. Wayne began working for Agassiz Construction in 1973, retiring as Project Manager for the company, which became known as Industrial Contract Services, in 2006. After Dawn retired from her position with the Northwest Regional Corrections Center, they moved to St. Cloud in 2010 to be closer to their daughters and their families. In his younger days Wayne enjoyed golfing, motorcycling, and auto racing. His lifelong passions were hunting and fishing, and he especially looked forward to annual trips taken with 'the boys.' He was a talented woodworker, and liked to design and build things that resulted from his own imagination. Wayne had recently become quite adept at creating water gardens. He was a friend to everyone, known for his generous ways, and quiet and humble nature. Wayne's memory will be forever treasured by his lifelong partner, Dawn, of St. Cloud, MN; their 2 daughters, sons-in-law, and 6 grandchildren: Rochelle and Bill Schmit of Sauk Rapids, MN and children, Jacob and Gabrielle, and Sarah and Jeremy Jensen and children, Griffin, Meric, Sophie, and Sasha; his sister, Linda (David) Parsons of Andover, MN; 4 aunts: Betty Lou Thoreson, Ada Jorgenson, Mary Donaldson, and Marlys Sather; and the couple's pet dog, "Ginger", truly one of the family. Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Irene Weum; his parents, Leonard and Cleone; and a sister, Judy Weber. Blessed be Wayne's memory. A memorial service for Wayne Newton will be held at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston on Friday, July 5, 2013, at 1:00p.m., with visitation for one hour before. This will be followed by a Traditional Native Pipe Ceremony. The family requests that memorials may be given in Wayne's honor to the Salvation Army.
