Vernon Grove

Vernon Duane Grove, 73, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully at the Halstad Living Center in Halstad, MN on Tuesday morning, June 19, 2012. Vernon was born in Crookston, MN on January 17, 1939, to Arthur and Idella (Larson) Grove. He grew up on the family's rural Climax, MN farm, and was baptized and confirmed at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church. Vernon attended school in Climax, MN, and also at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. In November of 1956, he joined the United States Air Force, serving in Korea and Japan. Vernon was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and received his honorable discharge in 1960. He returned to Climax, where he ran the family farm, harvesting beets and small grains. Vernon was also employed at Wylie Trucking and Jiffy Fry for many years. In December of 1962, he was united in marriage to MerryAnn Reitmeier at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Crookston. They were blessed with five children: Ward, Kym, Kyle, Tyler, and Jason. Sadly, Jason passed away on June 5, 1981. After retiring from farming later that same year, Vernon moved to Crookston. Over the years he enjoyed traveling with his boys to Texas, farming, and spending time at his camper on Lake Sarah at Erskine, MN. May God bless Vernon's memory. Mourning the loss of Vernon are his 4 sons and their spouses: Ward and Pam Grove of Climax, MN, Kym and Janet Grove of Shelly, MN, Kyle and Elizabeth Grove of Killdeer, ND, and Tyler and Rhea Grove of East Grand Forks, MN. His memory will live on with his 17 grandchildren: Bethany, Seth, Travis, Ethan, Cherith, Heather, and Annika Grove, Rachel, Taylor, and Megan Grove, Alicia, Mitchell, Kaylee, Jessica, and Justin Grove, and Ryan and Madison Grove; 2 sisters, LaRayne Morvig of Sun Lakes, AZ and Carol (Robert) Caouette of Apache Junction, AZ; 2 sisters-in-law, Mary Grove and Lois Grove, both of Crookston, MN; special friend, Joanne Halliday of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Vernon was preceded in death by his son, Jason David Grove; parents, Arthur and Idella Grove; brothers, Mike and Kenneth Grove; brother-in-law, Obert Morvig; and niece, LouAnn Skrei. A funeral service celebrating the life of Vernon Duane Grove will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 25, 2012, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston with The Rev. Valerian Ahles, presiding. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-7 pm, with a 7 PM prayer service, and for one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will take place in the Sand Hill Lutheran Cemetery, Climax. Military Honors will be provided by the Honors Unit of the Minnesota National Guard Moorhead, MN and Hubbard American Legion Post #336 of Nielsville.
