Sister Augustine Sudkamp

September 19, 1914 — September 29, 2012

Sister Augustine Sudkamp CSJ, 98, of Crookston, Minnesota, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph Congregation, entered into eternal life early Saturday morning, September 29, 2012, at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston. Sister Augustine (Cora Mae) was born on September 19, 1914 to John Joseph Sudkamp and Oma Norman Penn. Cora Mae grew up in Ruston, Louisiana where she attended Holy Angels Academy and New Orleans Academy, and was a 1931 graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. She joined the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 15, 1931 and began her initial religious training at St. Joseph's Provincial House in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received her religious garb and the name of Sister Mary Augustine on April 27, 1932. Sister pronounced her First Vows on May 3, 1933 and her Final Vows on August 15, 1936. She celebrated her Diamond Jubilee on October 10, 2008. Sister Augustine's musical education began at an early age with her mother as a music teacher. Her music education continued after she made her First Vows in 1933. In 1954, Sister Augustine graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, with a degree in music and piano. During this time she also taught first through eighth grade, high school shorthand and typing, and gave chorus and piano lessons. She also served as secretary, receptionist, and typist for the General and Provincial Archives of New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Sister Augustine continued her education at LSU and achieved her Master's degree in music and piano in 1971. In 1989, she transferred to Marywood in Crookston, Minnesota to continue the same work with the added duties of liturgy planner, accompanist, typist, and librarian. She often claimed she was a New Orleans transplant, but was welcomed and embraced by those in Crookston. Sister Augustine often attended workshops and conferences to keep updated in her professional field of music. In May of 2004, Sister Augustine and six other Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille moved to the Summit Apartments in Crookston where she continued playing music for liturgies in the Villa Chapel into her late nineties. In 2011, Sister Augustine moved to the Villa St. Vincent and was an inspiration to all who attended to her needs. Her nieces and nephews, Greg, Linda, Beverly, Rose, and Cheryl, lovingly called her Aunt Cora and visited with her often both in person and on the telephone. Sister Augustine is survived by the Sisters of St. Joseph, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
