Obituary

Melvern Keith “Mel” Anderson passed away on October 29, 2026, in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Mel was born December 14, 1942, in Temple, Texas, and briefly met his father before World War II took him overseas. Baby Mel and his mother, Irene, returned to northern Minnesota until the war ended and the family was reunited. His sister, Cheryl, was born soon afterward.

Raised on a farm near Shelly, Minnesota, Mel developed a lifelong love of agriculture. He excelled in academics and sports, was active in Future Farmers of America (FFA), and formed the loyal friendships that would remain so important throughout his life. After graduating from Halstad High School in 1960, he attended North Dakota State University in Fargo. During his college years, he married Linda Davidson, and they welcomed sons David and Jim.

Mel earned undergraduate degrees in genetics and agronomy in 1965 and a Ph.D. in agronomy and plant breeding in 1969, all from North Dakota State University. His family moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he taught at the University of Kentucky and researched crop genetics, including red clover, wheat, and barley. Returning to Fargo, he taught and conducted research at NDSU. In the late 1970s, the family moved to Loveland, Colorado, where Mel joined North American Plant Breeders and rose to lead the company's operations. The company was later acquired by Anheuser-Busch.

In 1989, Mel became vice president of Busch Agricultural Resources and, a few years later, its president. He loved his work and took enormous pride in developing barley varieties used in Budweiser and other Anheuser-Busch beers. His expertise extended to hops, rice, wild rice, and sod development and production. As a respected agribusiness leader, he traveled through agricultural regions across North America and around the world, often spending hundreds of days a year on the road. His sons, David and Jim, also spent some summers working alongside their father, gaining firsthand experience in the agricultural world he loved.

For all his accomplishments, Mel remained a humble, hardworking family man, admired by colleagues and friends. His infectious laugh, enduring hint of a Scandinavian accent, and unmistakable mannerisms were familiar to everyone who knew him.

As Linda's health declined, Mel retired somewhat early in 2004. She died in 2005, after 42 years of marriage. Retirement hardly meant slowing down. Mel oversaw homes in St. Louis, Missouri; the Brainerd Lakes area of Minnesota; Hilton Head Island, South Carolina; and Loveland, Colorado, maintaining all four until 2020. He continued his involvement in agriculture through several board roles and his chairmanship of the World Agricultural Forum, which worked to improve crops for water-scarce regions of Africa.

Above all, Mel was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He loved golf, fishing, hunting, bicycling, beach, lake, and mountain life (along with healthy doses of ice cream and Budweiser), and traveling the world with his family. He enthusiastically cheered on his grandchildren's athletic, academic, scouting, musical, and other activities. His generosity supported their interests, the education and well-being of children with special needs, and international efforts to feed and foster children in need. Most recently, Mel's family established a scholarship endowment in his honor at NDSU to support students pursuing advanced degrees in plant sciences. Even as dementia gradually made his world smaller, family and friendship remained at the heart of his life.

Mel is survived by his son, David (Jane) Anderson; daughter-in-law, Ceri Anderson; granddaughters, Annika (Drew Kish) Anderson and Abby (Luke) Bisping; grandsons, Jared (Zaria) Everett-Anderson and Jonathan Anderson; great-granddaughter, Remington Bisping; and sister, Cheryl Hemberger. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda (Davidson) Anderson; son, Jim Anderson; parents, Melvin and Irene Anderson; brother-in-law, Tom Stuart; and dear friends, Pepper Eisenhardt, Brad Buechler, and Jan Neizing.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 4, 2026, at Sand Hill Lutheran Church in Climax, Minnesota. Mel will be laid to rest beside Linda in the church cemetery.

In lieu of memorial gifts, the family invites you to make a donation to an organization of your choice that would make Mel smile.
