Obituary

Mariann Gunhilda (Nackerud) Averill, 87, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 22, 2026, at St. Martin's Village in Rapid City, SD.

Mariann was born on December 17, 1938, in Walnut Grove, MN, to Rolf and Bernita (Olson) Nackerud. She graduated from Walnut Grove High School in 1957. During her teenage years, she worked as a soda jerk in Walnut Grove. On September 17, 1957, she married Charles Lee "Chuck" Averill in Walnut Grove, MN. It's easy to imagine that her warm and wonderful smile was one of the things that first captured his attention.

Charles and Mariann began their 59-year marriage in southern MN before relocating to various parts of northern MN. They eventually made their home in Crookston, MN, where they lived for over 30 years and together, they raised five children.

Throughout her life, Mariann worked in various roles, but she was especially known for her exceptional talent in cake decorating, cookie baking, and lefse making. Anyone who had the opportunity to enjoy one of her creations knew they were in for something special. She also possessed remarkable calligraphy skills.

Mariann's quiet faith was reflected in her servant's heart and her dedication to others. She faithfully served for many years as the nursery ministry leader at Bible Baptist Church in Crookston, MN, as was actively involved in other areas of church life.

Mariann was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Averill; her parents; her brothers, Charles Nackerud and Rolf Nackerud and her sister, Janice Moe.

She is survived by her children: James (Mary Lou) Averill of Hannaford, ND, Rhonda (Ron) Peterson of Black Hawk, SD, Mari (Brett) Hansen of Owatonna, MN, Rolf Averill of Oro Valley, AZ, and Rachel (Darrell) Schindler of Grand Rapids, MN. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and by her siblings: Bruce (Crystal) Nackerud, Jay (Nancy) Nackerud and Diane (Nackerud) Crick.

Mariann deeply loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and took great joy in making cakes for their weddings, graduations, and birthdays. Her greatest desire was that her children and grandchildren would place their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. May God bless the legacy of faith and grace that Mariann leaves behind.

A visitation is scheduled for May 1st from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, MN. A graveside service will follow the visitation at Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston, MN, with Pastor Preston Hoiseth officiating.
