Marian Martin

May 27, 1912 — January 1, 2012

Marian Denise Martin, 99, of Dilworth, MN, and a former longtime Crookston, MN resident, died Sunday, January 1, 2012, in Essentia Health in Fargo, ND, after a brief illness. Born on May 27, 1912 in Willow City, ND, Marian was the youngest of eight children of August and Minnie (Kitzman) Lizotte. She grew up in Willow City where she was baptized and confirmed in Notre Dame Catholic Church, and graduated from high school at the Notre Dame Academy. Marian went on to attend Minot State Teachers' College, and in 1930 received an Associate Degree, and Teacher's Certificate. For the next seven years Marian taught in western North Dakota schools before her marriage to Lorenzo "Larry" Martin on July 2, 1938 in Willow City. Together, Marian and Larry raised three daughters: Sharon, Constance, and Kathryn. They lived in Donnelly, MN and Hettinger, ND before moving to Crookston in 1956. While Larry was employed by the Grain Terminal Association (GTA), Marian led a very busy life as wife, mom to three active girls, and homemaker. She was a devoted member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish, where she was a charter member of the Bishop Schenk Court of Catholic Daughters, St. Anne's Sodality, Church circle, and taught religious education (CCD). She was also a lector, Eucharistic minister, retreat chairman, and led her family in saying the rosary daily in their home. Marian was an avid bridge player, playing duplicate bridge and regular bridge. She was a member of the Homemaker's Club, Garden Club, and a volunteer for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society for many years. She enjoyed flower arranging and was especially proud of her beautiful flower beds of mums and daisies. Marian and Larry enjoyed spending time together golfing and fishing, and wintering in San Antonio, TX after retirement. Her most precious time was spent with her family, and she always looked forward to family gatherings. Sadly, Larry passed away on May 8, 1997. In 2007 Marian moved to Dilworth, MN so that she could be closer to her daughter, Connie. She had most recently been a parishioner of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Moorhead, MN. Marian looked forward to meeting her Lord and being reunited with Larry, and her prayers were answered late on New Year's Day afternoon. She will be remembered not only for her many accomplishments, but also for her faith, enthusiasm, kindness, and a true spirit of generosity that she shared with one and all. Her loving family, and the good friends she made over the years, will be forever grateful to have been a part of her life. May God richly bless Marian's memory. Marian leaves 3 daughters and sons-in-law: Sharon and James Schlosser of Scottsdale, AZ, Constance and Daniel Gulseth of Dilworth, MN, and Kathryn and Richard Larson of Folsom, CA; 11 grandchildren: Leslie Miller, Lynne, Laurie, and Mark Schlosser, Jeffrey (Terri) Gulseth, Steven (Lisa) Gulseth, Michael (Brenda) Gulseth, Kevin (Kim) Larson, Jacquelyn (Daren) Douglas, Stephanie (Peter) Hashagen, and Theresa (Brian) Murphy; 17 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews. In addition to Larry, her beloved husband of fifty-eight years, Marian was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Michele Larson; grandson, Paul Larson; great-granddaughter, Sydney Gulseth; 3 brothers: Philip, Edgar, and Alfred Lizotte; and 4 sisters: Sylvia Diepolder, Eva Siefert, Edna Knoke, and infant sister, Genevieve. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marian Denise Martin will be held at 1:30 pm, Thursday, January 5, 2012, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, MN. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-7:00 pm, with a 7:00 pm prayer and rosary service, and time of memory sharing. Visitation will also be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Crookston. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be given in memory of Marian to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception or a charity of the donor's choice.
