Marian DeBoer

July 19, 1928 — August 1, 2012

Marian Delores (Melin) DeBoer, 84, of Isanti, MN, and a former longtime Crookston and Maple Lake resident, died peacefully, Wednesday morning, August 1, 2012, at her home. Marian was born at Thief River Falls, MN, on July 19, 1928, and was one of five children of the union of Henry and Hattie (Larson) Melin. She grew up on the family's farm near Red Lake Falls, MN, and was baptized and confirmed at the nearby Black River Lutheran Church. Marian attended country school before coming to Crookston, where she received her high school diploma from the Northwest School of Agriculture. On October 10, 1949 she was united in marriage to William F. DeBoer at Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Roome Township, near Eldred, MN, where they farmed for many years. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Michael William, Daniel Alan, and Diane Lynn. Sadly, in 1956, and at the age of three, Michael died quite unexpectedly of a sudden illness. William passed away on May 27, 1971. Marian continued to manage the farm until her retirement. In 2000 she sold the farmstead and moved to her lake home on Maple Lake, near Mentor, MN. A year ago, and in failing health, she moved to Long Lake, near Isanti, to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Ken. Marian was a devoted member of the First English Lutheran Church at Eldred and the Ladies Aid of the church. She had been very active in the RiverView Hospital Auxiliary for many years and held most of the Auxiliary's offices. Marian co-founded the regional chapter of the Minnesota Women for Agriculture, and over the years traveled extensively representing the organization. She enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings, but was truly a die-hard Twins fan. She was able to make a trip to the Cities to see a game in the new stadium with her granddaughter, Katelyn, and special friend, Gretchen, and was thrilled to experience the day and to be able to share it with the girls. Marian liked to read, and have "friendly" debates with family and friends, mostly about politics. She was very proud of her kids and grandkids and loved them all dearly. May God bless the memory of Marian Delores DeBoer. Grateful to have shared in Marian's life are her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Judy DeBoer of Tallahassee, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Ken Hendrickson of Anoka, MN; six grandchildren: Melinda DeBoer of Lund, Sweden, William DeBoer of Stillwater, OK, Matthew (Chessica) Olson and Paul Olson, all of Isanti, MN, Katelyn Hvidston of St. Francis, MN, and Sean Hvidston of Anoka; a step-grandson, Brandon Parker of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren, Joslynn and Jace Olson; and an "honorary grandson," Blake Hanson of Crookston, MN. Marian also leaves a brother-in-law, George Hermon of Palmer, AK and three sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Gordy) Witzel of Newport, MN, JoEllen Melin of Falling Waters, WV, and Henriette "Hank" Beiswenger of Eldred, MN; a special friend and caregiver, Gretchen Hemen, of Isanti, and her son, Shaun, who also knew Marian as "grandma," and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her beloved husband of twenty-one years, William, and son, Mikie, Marian was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Hattie Melin; a sister, Evelyn Hermon, and three brothers, Melvin, Vern, and Donald Melin.
