Louis George Biermaier, 91, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away on August 27, 2026, at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.

Louis was born on March 9, 1935 in Browerville, Minnesota to George Henry Biermaier and Helen Mary (Becker) Biermaier. He attended the country school near Browerville in Todd County through 8th grade, eventually earning his GED. Louis lived in Browerville until 1964. During his time in Browerville, he worked for the family farm after completing 8th grade. He also worked for the Browerville Milk Plant. In April of 1955, Louis enlisted in the United States Army where he served in Baumholder, Germany as a Construction Machinist Operator until 1957. After leaving active duty, he continued to serve in the Army Reserves until 1963. On December 30, 1958, Louis married LaVerne Elizabeth Evans in Flensburg, Minnesota. After moving to Crookston in 1964, Louis worked for Mount St. Benedict Farm, the Diocese of Crookston, and worked for the University of Minnesota, Crookston for 23 years. Sadly, LaVerne passed away in an accident in 1993. He later met Pat Cotton-Landgaard and they married in Crookston on June 16, 1995.

Louis’ faith was an integral part of his life. He was an active member of the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception and an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus. Louis was also active with the American Legion and the Eagles. His service did not go unnoticed as he was awarded the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon-Military Service Recognition.

Louis was very active throughout his life. He was always working extra jobs including painting houses, cleaning the Beet Plant offices and filling gum ball machines. This led to him being known as the “Gum Ball Man” around town. He never met a “stranger” and loved talking to people as he seemed to be related to everyone. Louis had an amazing memory and paid attention to every detail. He never forgot a date or past event.

Louis was a man of many interests. He loved garage sales. He loved having them and attending them. Louis was so good at packing that on a return trip from Arizona he once said “you couldn’t fit a book of matches in there”. Louis loved dancing, watching the Twins play baseball, and playing cards. He loved camping, loved visiting people and helping people whenever he could.

Louis enjoyed gardening. He would start his seeds in February to ensure a great garden in the summer. He was a coin collector as well as a collector of license plates. Louis was very creative as was evident when he turned the license plates into bird houses. Louis found a passion in making crosses. He made over 3,000 crosses from Buckthorn and Diamond Willow throughout his life.

Louis was known for his massive hands and a crippling handshake that would make you think your hand was broken. His grandchildren knew he always had Tic-Tacs in his front pocket, and he loved sharing them. He was also known for his “Louis-isms” such as: Steak so thin you could see your neighbor across the table and balance so bad I almost tripped over my own shadow.

Louis is survived by his wife, Pat Biermaier; children, George (Rhonda) Biermaier of Roseau, Steve (Jana) Biermaier of Crookston, Mary (Gary) Sowada of Little Falls, Paul (Karen) Biermaier of Crookston, Mike (Ronda) Biermaier of Grand Forks; stepchildren, John (Jodi) Landgaard of Mitchell, SD, Mark Landgaard of Newport Beach, CA, Jim (Angela Landgaard) of Peachtree City, GA, Ken Landgaard of Bozeman, MT. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Derek (Brittney) Biermaier, Sean (Mel) Biermaier, Eric (Tiffany) Biermaier, Lukas (Heidi) Biermaier, Nick (Taylor) Biermaier, Andrew (Kennedy) Biermaier, Sebastian (Rachelle) Sowada, Sophia Sowada, Katherine Sowada, Ashley (Preston) Engel, Janessa (Jared) Quanrud, Kailey (Robert) Laznicka; Rachel (Ryan) Paasch, Meleah (Bailee) O’Reilly, Blake Biermaier, Cassie (Eric) Lundberg, Abbie (Ben) Phillips, Erik (Abigail) Landgaard, Bryce Landgaard, Cole Landgaard, Lillia Landgaard, Culley Landgaard; great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Isla, Mason, Bailey, Jacob, Leah, Jaxon, Mara, Bennett, August, Louis, Gina, Ella, Jack, Noah, Waylon, Micah, Anna, Kenzie, Ryker, Jersie, Rhett, Peyton, Julian, Penelope, Ellawyn-Kate, Charlie, Quinnly, Rory, Rowan, Paisley, Rocco, Theo, Eloise, Josie. He is survived by his siblings, Anne Marie Biermaier of St Joseph, MN, Ron (Sherry) Biermaier of Richfield, MN, Karen (Daryl) Brever of Browerville, MN; sister-in-law, Doris Biermaier of Long Prairie, MN.

Louis is preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen; wife, LaVerne Biermaier; brother, Dennis Biermaier.

A funeral service honoring Louis' life will be held at the Cathedral of The Immaculate Conception in Crookston, Minnesota on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be one-hour prior, starting at 10:00 a.m. A prayer service will be held the evening prior on Sunday, August 30, visitation will be from 5-7:00 p.m. followed by the prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Services will be livestreamed, a link to which will be available at www.stenshoelhouske.com/obituaries/louis-biermaier
