Kathryn Bakken-Dryden

May 30, 1952 — December 4, 2012

After receiving skilled and compassionate care from the Mayo Clinic, the Chopra Center, Altru Health, and Riverview Health, Kathy's two-year journey with cancer came to an end on Tuesday evening, December 4th, 2012 with her loving husband, sister, and friends at her side. Kathy was born May 30, 1952 in Thief River Falls, MN, the daughter of Raymond "Jim" and Mary (Warner) Dryden. She attended school at Saint Bernard's Elementary, Lincoln High, and Bemidji State University earning a bachelor's degree in education from BSU in 1974. Kathy married her soul mate, Tom Bakken, July 1, 1990.

Kathy took great pride in her wide-ranging career that included teaching at Highland Middle School, the Northwest Regional Corrections Center, the Adult Learning Center, Crookston High School, Crookston Junior High School, and the Red River Valley Juvenile Center (Northern Lights Academy). Interestingly, some of her teaching assignments occurred simultaneously. As a teacher in these varied settings Kathy developed the drama program at Highland, served as a Crookston Education Association negotiator, started the Adult Learning Center, worked as a training facilitator with the Minnesota Department of Education, established the experiential World Class program, and created an after-school program for at-risk girls. Additionally, she served on a committee that established services for battered women in northwest MN. Kathy used her training as a Myers-Briggs consultant to individualize her instruction. In 1989 Kathy received the distinguished Minnesota Chamber of Commerce Foundation "Eddy" award for excellence in education. Kathy enjoyed gardening, cooking, walking, meditating, reading and spending time with her friends. She was a passionate Democrat. She loved her nieces and nephews with all her heart. Kathy's parents, Jim and Mary Dryden and two sisters, Mary Lynn Clark and Jean Kelly preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-two years, Tom Bakken-Dryden; her sister, Debbie (Dryden) Collins; two cousins, William "Bill" Nelson and Jewell Lund; fourteen nieces and nephews: Michael Collins and Melanie Dymek, Kerry and Dan Haney, Chris and Stephanie Collins, Heather and Chris Wahl, Casey and Dave Buckingham, Melissa and Bobby Bresemann, Kathleen Collins and Steve Ruff, Alison and Andy Gotto, Megan Haugen, Mitchell Haugen, Jocelyn Solheim, Holden Solheim, Chloe Solheim, Kate Bakken, and nine great nieces and nephews. Kathy was an inspiration to many and always looked on the bright side of life.
