Hildegard "Hilde" Brost, age 105, of Crookston, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026.
Hildegard Ross was born in Medina, North Dakota on December 5, 1920, the daughter of Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Joachim) Ross. She grew up in Medina, was baptized and confirmed at the Congregational Church there, and graduated from Medina High School in 1940. She was employed at Streeter, North Dakota for a short time before moving to Kulm, North Dakota in 1942 where she worked at the General Mercantile Store. On August 13, 1944, Hilde was united in marriage to Hilmer A. Brost at the home of his parents, David and Margaret Brost, in Kulm. Hilde continued to work at the Mercantile Store for a short while before devoting herself to the more than fulltime tasks of being a wife and mother, while also running a busy household. Hilmer was in partnership with his brother in an automobile-implement dealership in Kulm known as Brost Brothers. In 1967, after selling out their share of the business, Hilde, Hilmer, and their children moved to Crookston where they purchased Mason Chevrolet, renaming it Brost Chevrolet. In 1975 they started spending several weeks every winter in Mesa, Arizona where they fell in love with the area. Soon they met many life long friends through nights of playing cards and days spent on the golf course. They wintered in AZ until 2011.
While living in Kulm, Hilde had been an active member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and had taught Sunday School there for several years. She also belonged to the Civic League and the Homemakers' Club. After moving to Crookston, she became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and Women’s Club.
Hilde loved to sew, bake, cook, play cards, and games, the word jumbles, she loved to shop and get a good deal, her flowers and plants were nurtured daily, She watched many Twins games and golf tournaments. In Crookston, she and Hilmer were active in many bowling leagues and then their passion for golf began. She would golf 4-5 times a week and golfed until 95. Her love for spending time with family always centered around meals. She was an excellent cook and would happily make food for everyone. You never left her house without taking leftovers with you.
Loving family members include her children: a son and daughter-in-law, Allen H. & Bonnie Brost of Erskine, MN; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Alfred "Fritz" Metzger, and Laura and Mark Lyczewski, both of Crookston, MN.
