Harriet Strand

May 1, 1922 — September 28, 2012

Harriet Marion Strand, 90, of Erskine, MN, and a longtime Crookston, MN resident, died peacefully early Friday morning, September 28, 2012, at the Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine, with her family at her side. Harriet had been in residence at Pioneer since October of 2010. She was born in Erskine on May 1, 1922, the daughter of B.M. Bensen and Hazel (Peterson) Bensen. She first attended the Clementson School and then graduated from Erskine High School in 1940. Harriet received her teacher's training certification at East Grand Forks, MN, and then taught at the Rindahl (MN) Country School. On June 28, 1945 she was united in marriage to Norman R. Strand at Erskine. The couple made their home in Crookston and together raised 3 children: Gary, Charlene, and LaVon. Over the years Harriet was employed at Jack & Jill Grocery, Miller's Super Valu, and for twenty years as a clerk at Eagle Drug before her retirement. Harriet and Norman were devoted members of the Church of Christ in Crookston for many years. Harriet served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and participated in many other church organizations. She could always be counted on when a helping hand was needed. Her favorite pastimes included reading and sewing. Harriet and Norman enjoyed traveling and their journeys had taken them to nearly all of the States. Sadly, Norman passed away on November 27, 1999. Harriet will be very lovingly remembered and missed by her family and all who shared in her life. Harriet leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Becky Strand of Springfield, MO; 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Charlene McArdell of Riverside, CA, and LaVon and Rick Krahn of Nemo, SD; 3 grandchildren: Lisa (Jamey) Cline of Council Bluffs, IA, Lance (Amy) McArdell of Riverside, CA, and Amanda McArdell of Riverside, CA; and 8 great-grandchildren: Taylor and Sierra McArdell, Brandon and Ethan Cline, Keron English, and Keyana, Kenaniah, and Kemiah McArdell. She is also survived by 2 sisters, Violet Benoy of Truman, MN and Delores (Alden) Birkelo of Colorado Springs, CO; a sister-in-law, Bernice Bensen of Bismarck, ND; and many nieces and nephews, including Terry and Dale Hickman, who were very special in Harriet's life. In addition to Norman, her beloved husband of 54 years, Harriet was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, Fred McArdell; 4 brothers: Marvin (and his wife, Ruth), Arnold (and his wife, Cathy), Orlin, and Lloyd; and a sister, Bernice. Blessed be the memory of Harriet Marion Strand. The funeral service honoring the life of Harriet Strand will be held at 2:00pm, Monday, October 1, 2012, at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, MN, with Pastor Ray Dietz, officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
