Gary Steer passed away on August 5, 2026, at his home in Sun City, Arizona.

Gary was born on July 13, 1951, to John E. Steer and Margaret "Sue" Steer of Crookston, Minnesota. He bragged to this day that he was potty trained by nine months of age.
Along with his siblings, Joan, Donald, and Annette, Gary attended the Cathedral throughout grade school and high school. Growing up, Gary worked as a Minneapolis Tribune paperboy, at Luck's Bakery, and at Dahlgren's Sunflower.

In 1969, a son, Nathan, was born to high school sweethearts Rosemary Voudrin and Gary. Gary later enlisted in the United States Army, serving 18 months in Augsburg, Germany, and 12 months in Vietnam with the 4th Infantry Division.

Following his military service, Gary worked for Fleet Supply, Nordheim Electric, and American Crystal Sugar.

In 1972, he married Bonnie Reitmeier. Together, they had three children: Travis, Tera, and Tyler. The family resided in Gentilly, Minnesota, where they owned a hobby farm and, for a short time, the Snow Sled Inn. Gary and Bonnie divorced in 1986.

Gary later married Tammy Baumgartner Lang, and they shared 34 years together. Through their marriage, Gary gained three additional children: Jasmin, Andrew, and Sasha.

Gary retired in the fall of 2013 after working for American Crystal Sugar in Crookston for 38 years. Beginning in January 2014, Gary and Tammy spent their summers in Minnesota and winters in Sun City, Arizona. Their winters were filled with frequent visits from family and friends, along with the many new friendships they made over the years.

Gary served Jesus through his steadfast faith and continued devotion to the Roman Catholic Church. His faith was a part of his everyday life. He spent his mornings in devotion and prayer and made a point to pray for each and every member of his family throughout the week. Gary was very open about his faith, and that faith gave him strength, peace, and a remarkably positive outlook throughout his cancer journey. He faced each day knowing that, in the end, he would be going home to Heaven.

Gary is survived by his wife of 34 years, Tammy of Sun City, Arizona; Nathan's family, including daughter-in-law Mary Feiting of St. Paul, Minnesota; Travis Steer (Deb Carroll) of Whitesboro, Texas; Tera (Corey) Heiser of Crookston, Minnesota; Tyler Steer of Crookston, Minnesota; Jasmin Rollings of Livermore, California; Andrew "Andy" (Shana) Lang of North Mankato, Minnesota; and Sasha (Jeremy) Billing of Beltrami, Minnesota; 25 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his sisters, Annette (Jerry) Baird and Joan Henrickson; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret "Sue" Steer; his brother, Donald Steer; his son, Nathan Lindsley; his grandson, Austin Rollins; and his father-in-law, Frank Baumgartner.

Funeral arrangements are being finalized, with services to be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Crookston, Minnesota. Gary will later be laid to rest with honor at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Additional service details will be shared once arrangements are complete.
