Dolores Doda

October 25, 1931 — October 21, 2016

Longtime local business owner Dolores "Chic" Mae Doda, age 84, of Crookston, MN, passed away on October 21, 2016 at Riverview Health in Crookston, MN with her family by her side. Dolores was born on October 25, 1931 to Wilbert "Ernie" and Ruby (Sheperd) Wagberg in the Republic Township of Marquette County, Michigan. She spent most of her childhood in Detroit, Michigan but then moved to Kingsford, MI where she attended high school. While in Kingsford she enjoyed roller skating, dancing, and ice skating. Dolores met Andrew David Doda on a blind date in February of 1948. Chic married the love of her life, Andy, on April 13th 1950. They were blessed with one daughter, Cynthia Jo. During her life Dolores lived in Detroit, MI, Kingsford, MI, Iron Mountain, MI, and Crookston, MN. She worked at the Sweet Shop, ran banquets at the Crookston Motel, was a book keeper at Montgomery Wards, and finally at D&B Freight Sales the business her and Andy started together, which was in downtown Crookston from 1957-58, and was built new on the north end of Crookston in 1958-59. They were in business for 56 years. Sadly her husband Andy passed away in May of 1979, she continued to run the business by herself until her daughter Cindy became a partner. Chic's favorite part of the store was book keeping and interacting with the customers and her friends. She didn't quit working at the store until she was 82 years old. Dolores and Andy started going to Maple Lake and eventually ended up at Stony Point Resort at Cass Lake for 43 years. Dolores enjoyed spending time at the lake, playing cards and traveling on bus trips with her sister Bev. The last trip they took was to Savanah, GA. Dolores and Bev were a little turned around and got lost. The bus had to leave but passed by them on the street and stopped for them. Dolores cooked for the Doda family and whoever else came to their home most Sundays. She liked to bowl with her friends from Montgomery Wards. She enjoyed attending family events especially if it was something her grandson Andy was doing. Dolores was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, St. Anthony's Circle, the VFW, the Eagles, and the Minakwa Country Club. Dolores is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Jo (Darren) Gjerswold; grandson, Andrew Keith Gjerswold; sister, Beverly Filipowicz, and sister in-law Carol Wagberg. She is preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Doda; her parents; Wilbert "Ernie" and Ruby Wagberg; and brother, Linwood Wagberg. May God bless Chic's memory.
