Dale Halos

August 6, 1934 — December 12, 2018

Dale Mercy Halos, 84, a lifelong Crookston, MN resident, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home early Wednesday morning, December 12, 2018.

Dale was born at the St. Vincent Hospital in Crookston on August 6, 1934, the son of Louis C. and Jean L. (Mercy) Halos. He was baptized and confirmed at the Wesley United Methodist Church and graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1952. From 1953-59 Dale was employed as the bookkeeper and office manager for Mason Chevrolet, and then the office manager of Fert-L-Flow through 1965. Dale next became the Crookston City Assessor, a position he held until 1983. During these years, and beyond, he continued to work part-time for Fert-L-Flow. In 1984 Dale was named Polk County Assessor, skillfully managing the work of the County until his retirement in 1996.

On October 19, 1957 Dale was united in marriage to Alva Norita Gade at her home church, St. John’s, near Ada, MN. Together they raised their two children, Brian and Carrie, in a very loving home. Alva was a longtime nurse and was named Crookston’s Nurse of the Year in 1971. Sadly, she passed away on April 25, 2008. A second great loss came to Dale and his family with the unexpected passing of daughter, Carrie Gorans, on February 4, 2018.

Dale was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for several years, was a member of the Church Board, and a 3-term president of the congregation. He was an officer for the Jaycee’s on the local, state, and national levels; and held a Senatorship in the Junior Chamber International organization. Professionally, Dale was President of the Minnesota Association of Assessing Officers and Secretary of the Minnesota Assessors Association. He also held many leadership positions in the Crookston community including: serving as a city councilman from 1961-64, president of Aldor homes, president of the Crookston Community Theater, president of Polk County TRIAD, and chair of the Crookston Community Fund. Additionally, Dale was a former secretary-treasurer of the Crookston Pirate Amateur Baseball Team; treasurer of the Occupational Development Center (ODC); and treasurer of the Polk County Group Homes. He served on the Golden Link Board; the Crookston Planning Commission; held memberships in the Pirate Boosters and Pirate Fine Arts Boosters; and was a volunteer with Hospice, RSVP, and RiverView Health. In 2000 Dale and Alva received the Volunteer Couple of the Year Award from the City of Crookston.

Dale’s greatest love was his family. He cherished his fifty years of marriage to Alva, enjoying bowling, golfing, playing cards, socializing with friends, camping with the kids, and wintering in Alabama and Arizona. Dale deeply loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reveling in their accomplishments and life milestones. He faithfully followed all of the activities (school, sports, music) the kids were involved in and was their biggest fan. Dale relaxed by watching any and all sports on tv and doing crossword puzzles….in ink!

While it is incredibly hard to say goodbye to their beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dale’s family give thanks for the life they shared, and rejoice that he has been reunited with Alva and Carrie. May God bless the memory of Dale Mercy Halos.

Loving family members include Dale’s son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Mary Jo Halos of Crookston, MN; son-in-law, Troy Gorans of Willmar, MN; 7 grandchildren: Christian Halos and fiancè, Esther Gao, of Beijing, China, Benjamin Halos and Kathryn Halos of Crookston, Bailey and Wes Brooke of St. Francisville, IL, Taylor Sandberg of Grand Forks, ND, Austin and McKenna Sandberg of Edwardsville, IL, and Maddie Sandberg of St. Cloud, MN; and 3 great-granddaughters: Alexis, Keira, and Lillian Brooke. Dale also leaves several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Marlys Treichel of Coon Rapids, MN, Willard and Mary Ann Gade of Waubun, MN, Eldon and Kay Gade, and Keith and Diane Gade, all of Ada, MN, and Veda Gade of WI; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. In addition to his beloved wife, Alva, and daughter, Carrie, Dale is preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Jean Halos; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Kenny Eggebraaten; parents-in-law, Christ and Martha Gade; and brothers-in-law, Howard Treichel and Howard Gade.
