Nina Buness

February 3, 1922 — January 16, 2012

Nina Elaine Buness, 89, of Crookston, MN, and formerly of Eldred, MN, died peacefully in the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston early Monday morning, January 16, 2012, with her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Roger Odegaard at her bedside. Nina was born on February 3, 1922 in Russia Township, rural Crookston, the tenth of eleven children to Iver and Emma (Anderson) Iverson. Nina was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, attended Carmen School in Crookston and graduated from Central High School in 1940. She was employed in Crookston before her marriage to Vernon Merrill Buness on February 6, 1946. Nina and Vernie made their home on a farm in Andover Township while he farmed with his brothers in the Crookston area. In 1956 he began working at the Eldred Farmers Elevator and the couple, including their daughter Gail, lived in Fisher, MN and later Girard, MN. In 1963 they settled in Eldred where they owned and operated Vern's Service Station. The Station kept them very busy; with Nina working right alongside Vernie and the years seemed to go by quickly. In 2000 they retired and in 2002 Vernie became a resident of the Villa St. Vincent and in 2004 Nina moved to the Niemens-Espegaard apartments in Crookston. Sadly, Vernie passed away on September 14, 2005. Nina later moved to the RiverView Care Center, and then in March of 2006 to the Villa St. Vincent. Nina was a devoted member of the Sand Hill Lutheran Church, rural Climax, MN. Her favorite hobby was creating works of art with stained glass. When a stained glass window in her church was taken down, she took the glass and fashioned beautiful stained glass crosses which have adorned the narthex windows of the church for several years and made many other items with that glass for members of the Sand Hill congregation. She loved being outdoors enjoying God's creation and spending time in her gardens; she also enjoyed sewing, baking and watching sports. Her family members are very grateful for the wonderful care she received from the staff of the Villa during her last years. Nina will be very lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who shared in her life. Nina leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Roger Odegaard of Crookston, MN; 4 grandchildren: Kevin Odegaard, Karen (Robin) Brekken, and Karl Odegaard, all of Crookston, and Kylene (Darin) Lehmann of Sebeka, MN; 6 great-grandchildren: Karlie, Kayla, and Kendra Brekken, Otto and Sena Lehmann, and Jack Nobles; 3 sisters-in-law, Marlys Carey of Moorhead, MN, Margaret Buness of Crookston, and Verna Buness of Panama City Beach, FL; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to her husband Vernon, Nina was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers: Ted Iverson and Earl "Bud" Iverson; and 8 sisters: Edith Wermager, Myrtle Ross, Lil Burke, Junice Skrivseth, Agnes "Peg" Romance, Helen Ewing, Gladys Gilligan and Hazel Larson. May God bless Nina's memory. The funeral service for Nina Elaine Buness will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the Sand Hill Lutheran Church, rural Climax, MN, with The Rev. Joy Grainger officiating.
