Obituary for Frank Michael Barnes

Frank Michael Barnes, 78, died Saturday, May 13th, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks surrounded by family. He lost his battle against lymphoma.

Frank was born on October 28th, 1938, to Frank and Eleanor (Knudsen) Barnes in Spokane WA. He graduated from North Central High School where he excelled at basketball and baseball and served on the Student Council. Frank was selected for both All-State basketball and All-State baseball. He also played on All-City basketball and baseball teams. He attended Seattle University where he also played basketball and baseball; he received his degree in physical education and history. Through the years he played on multiple baseball teams and eventually signed with the Cincinnati Reds, playing with the Seattle Rainiers.

In 1959 he married Diane (Carmen Diane) O'Neil and they were blessed with three children; Steve, Tony, and Katie. Frank worked for the JCPenney Company in various management positions in Seattle, WA, Wolf Point, MT, and Havre, MT. Through the years he coached both Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, started a soccer league for boys and girls in Port Orchard, WA, and did volunteer work for the Seattle World's Fair and United Way. Frank served as treasurer of the Kitsap Pee Wee league, was a member of the Wolf Point City Business Assoc., coached the American Legion baseball team in Wolf Point, was president of the Havre shopping mall board, and served on the Chamber of Commerce. Sadly, Diane died of cancer after 27 years of marriage. Frank married Sharon (Johnson) Remick in 1986 and gained two stepsons, Leigh and Jeff. After retirement they moved to Minnesota to live at Maple Lake and later moved into Crookston. They enjoyed 20 years together before Sharon died of cancer. In 2007 Frank married Kathie (Petersen) Carlson and gained three more children; Brian, Lori, and Jana. He enjoyed many travels across the United States, Hawaii, and a trip to Scandinavia. Frank was a man of great faith and was actively involved in any church to which he belonged. He touched many lives with his love and kindness. In return he was loved by many and will be so deeply missed.

Frank is survived by his wife Kathie, sons Steve (Teri) Barnes of Rupert, ID and Tony (Melissa) Barnes of Kent, WA, and daughter Katie (Ken) Hoffman of Yokoto Air Base, Japan, stepchildren Leigh (Jamie) Remick of Louisville, KY, Jeff (Ingrid) Remick of Crookston, MN, Brian (Susan) Carlson of Grand Forks, ND, Lori Carlson of Fountain City, WI, and Jana (Paul) Hedlund of St. Paul, MN. He also leaves grandchildren Kolter (Jessica) Barnes, Landon (Rachel) Barnes, Jessica Barnes, Jennifer Barnes, Michael Hoffman, Matthew Hoffman, Mark Hoffman, John Hoffman, Ryan Remick, Kristin Remick (fiancé Logan Block), Aaron Remick (fiancée Lauren Kolker), and Cecilia Carlson, great-granddaughter Paisley, and brother Rick (Joy) Barnes. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives Diane and Sharon, and his sister and her husband, Carol and James Windle.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 18th, at 3:00 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Crookston, with visitation from 5 – 7 pm on Wednesday, May 17th, at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, prayer service at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, Frank requested that memorials be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Altru Cancer Center, or a charity of your choice.
